Energy Action will hold a two-day Fuel Poverty Conference in Dublin Castle on 7th-8th Feb 2011. Eamon Ryan TD. Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources will host the conference and will perform the opening address.

This multi-disciplinary conference is jointly hosted by School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast and Improving Children's Lives: an interdisciplinary research initiative based at QUB.

'Climate change: What can the health sector do?’ was the focus of this recent Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) seminar.  

This was a follow up to the Climate change seminar held in February, with a specific focus on actions needed by the health sector.  Access IPH paper 'Climate change and health: a platform for action'.
Speakers included:

'Translating research into community action' , 20 August 2010 was organised in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence for Public Health (CoE), Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) and the Community Development and Health Network (CDHN). This work falls under the works stream Public Health Knowledge Integration and Knowledge Brokerage of the CoE which was created in 2008 to help bridge the gap between research, policy and practice, and embed CoE research into policy dilemmas.

The 25th All Ireland Social Medicine Meeting will take place on 9 September 2010 in Belfast. 

Papers are invited for oral presentation or posters under the broad theme of social medicine, an all-island focus is particularly welcome.

The theme for Men's Health Week this year is Physical Activity, and all men and boys are encouraged to 'Get up. Get out. Get going!'  Men's Health Week gives everyone (health professionals, service providers, sporting bodies, community groups employers, policy makers, the media, individuals....) an opportunity to get involved.

Prof. James Sallis, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and Director of Active Living Research shared his experience of working to implement policy and practice change in the USA on improving levels of physical activity.  Prof Sallis has developed an extensive programme of work looking at the policy and environmental influences on physical activity, nutrition and obesity.  As Director of Active Living Research his work contributes to the prevention of childhood obesity in low income and high-risk communities.

The first strategic partnerships for health were formed around 20 years ago - intersectoral planning is recognised as an effective way of joining up agendas and resources and creating synergy.
