IPH recently presented at the 24th All Ireland Social Medicine Meeting (AISMM)
The 24th AISMM including presentations on key issues in public health and social medicine. Various presentation themes included obesity, health improvement, maternal and child health, cardiovascular health and cancer.

Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) Chief Executive, Dr. Jane Wilde, today welcomed Minister Mary Wallace’s statement on the need to re-double efforts in tackling obesity and her commitment to taking a cross-government approach.
Dr. Wilde said: “Most of the actions needed to prevent obesity fall outside the health sector and a much wider societal response is required.

IPH responds to European Commission consultation 'EU action to reduce health inequalities'

The European Commission Director-General for 'Health and Consumers' (DG SANCO) recently consulted on how the European Union can contribute to reducing health inequalities both within and between members states. Key stakeholders involved in European work with the European Commission in the areas of social policy and employment policy were consulted. DG SANCO will then develop a Commission Communication aiming to support the reduction of health inequalities in the EU. The consultation closed 15 April.

Consultation responses
The European Commission's Directorate-General for 'Health and Consumers' (DG SANCO) launched a consultation on EU action to reduce health inequalities which closed on 15 April 2009.
The aim of the consultation was to collect views on how the European Union can contribute to reducing health inequalities both within and between member states.

The next Health Analysts' Special Interest Group (HASIG) seminar will focus on using data at different geographical levels. Speaking at the event are Martin Charlton, National Centre for Geocomputation, NUI Maynooth, Fiona Johnston, Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Information Service (NINIS) and Howard Johnson and Carmel Cullen, Health Intelligence, Health Service Executive (HSE). The seminar will take place in Dundalk Institute of Technology.
