INIsPHO Lunchtime Seminar: Promoting a systematic all-Ireland approach to monitoring the population prevalence of diabetes

Start: 4 Sep 2007 - 10:30

End: 4 Sep 2007 - 13:00

Promoting a systematic all-Ireland approach to monitoring the population prevalence of diabetes

Angela Jordan, Adele Graham and Kevin P Balanda, The Institute of Public Health in Ireland

In 2006, Ireland and Northern Ireland’s Population Health Observatory at the Institute of Public Health published the first systematically developed estimates of the population prevalence of diabetes for the island of Ireland. This was followed in July of 2007 with the report “Making Diabetes Count: What does the future hold?” which provided prevalence forecasts for 2010 and 2015.

The reports suggest that by 2015, there will be an additional 70,000 adults on the island with diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed), an increase of 33% since 2005. Findings suggest that future trends in obesity rates on the island will be the main determinant of future diabetes prevalence rates.

In this lunchtime seminar we give an overview of the methods and findings from the two reports, together with an outline of the next stages of this work. There will be ample opportunity to discuss the reports, their implications for the prevention and management of diabetes and its complications, as well as the information and research gaps they identify.
