'Recent Developments in Knowledge Management for Public Health’ - Launch of the All-Ireland electronic library for public health
Linen Hall Library, Belfast, 6 March 2006
Last year, Ireland and Northern Ireland’s Population Health Observatory (INIsPHO) was established in the Institute of Public Health in Ireland.
The observatory aims to ‘support those working to improve health and reduce health inequalities by producing and disseminating health intelligence, and strengthening the research and information infrastructure on the island of Ireland’.
As part of its efforts to promote awareness and use of existing information, the observatory is developing the web-based Population Health Intelligence System
(PHIS (Online)).
At the core of that website is an electronic library of health knowledge resources, including policies and strategies, research and evaluation reports, tables of pre-calculated indicators, aggregated data sets, other media and links to key agencies.
Public health knowledge tends to be dispersed over many different sites. The infrastructure underpinning the PHIS (Online) library means that it can easily interface with other websites containing other health knowledge resources, greatly increasing access to them. People will spend less time looking for the information they need and more time examining it. This will strengthen evidence-based decision making on the island of Ireland.
We are launching the PHIS (Online) Library in Linen Hall Library, Belfast on Monday 6 March, 2006 and would be delighted if you could join us. At the launch, you will hear about recent developments in knowledge management for public health, receive a demonstration of the library and have an opportunity to discuss its future development. The programme is attached.
