A new report on health inequalities outlines the interrelationship between economic inequality and inequality of health outcomes. ‘Eliminating Health Inequalities – A Matter of Life and Death’ was launched by the Think Tank for Action on Social Change (TASC) on 14 June.

The Department of Health is developing a new public health policy to help people live healthier and more fulfilling lives and to create social conditions that ensure good health, on equal terms for the entire population. The policy will realise the provisions in the Programme for Government regarding a healthier population that will be protected from health threats, living in a healthier and more sustainable environment, with increased social and economic productivity and greater social inclusion.

The economic recession with its accompanying rise in unemployment rates is linked to extremely adverse effects for men’s mental health - according to new research from the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH).

IPH supported the Public Health Agency (PHA) to undertake a ‘health impact assessment’ on the Cardiovascular Service Framework which has identified ways of delivering cardiovascular services that will help to tackle health inequalities.

IPH has developed a discussion paper on food security on the island. This makes the case that health is and needs to be central to food and agricultural policy. Population health, food systems and agricultural production are intimately linked. A clear framework on food security is needed in both parts of the island of Ireland and this offers a key opportunity for cooperation.

A comprehensive website containing all relevant information on Northern Ireland’s growing obesity problem was launched in Belfast today in a bid to help in the fight against the epidemic.
The site called the Obesity Hub (http://obesity.thehealthwell.info) will help health experts, social planners, campaign groups and the media to keep up-to-date and use information to respond more effectively to the obesity problem.
