'Making Diabetes Count' - Diabetes Population Prevalence Estimates are now available
22 Jun 2006
The diabetes population prevalence estimates extracted from the report ‘Making Diabetes Count’ are now available. The diabetes estimates are not actual registered cases; rather they are expected total (diagnosed plus undiagnosed) values from synthetic estimation based on a model from England.
This is the first time that detailed diabetes estimates broken down by age, sex and ethnicity at a national and sub-national level are available. Accurate estimates of the population prevalence of diabetes allow us to describe the patterns of diabetes in the population, estimate the number of undiagnosed cases, plan and deliver services in a rational way, and monitor performance.
The tables look at Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in adults (age 20 years and over) and Type 1 diabetes in children (age 0-19 years). The estimates are disaggregated by age and sex. They are also disaggregated by ethnicity but this is for Northern Ireland data only.
Estimates are provided for at a national level for both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as at sub-national level including Health & Social Services Boards, Health Service Executive Regions, Local Government Districts and Local Health Office areas.
