The 17th annual UKPHA conference, entitled Health inequalities – turning the tide?, took place on 25th-26th March 2009, in Brighton.  IPH co-hosted two workshops at the event and contributed to the Celtic Nations’ Showcase stand.

The first, Engaging Europe: what is the EU added-value to reducing health inequalities?, was jointly hosted by the NorthWest Health Brussels Office, EuroHealthNet and IPH and included a presentation by Teresa Lavin on the Determine project findings to date.  Determine is a three year project commenced in 2007 and part funded by the EU public health programme.  The project is a consortium of over 50 health bodies, governments and various other organizations from 27 European countries. It is aimed at the policy level, particularly policy in non-health areas, to examine the extent to which health and health equity is considered when policy is being formed.

The second, Celtic Nations’ Showcase: Same goal, doing it differently, comprised a review and discussion of policy and practice across Scotland, Wales and the island of Ireland.  Teresa Lavin presented information on behalf of the Public Health Alliance for the Island of Ireland (PHAII).
